French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used as a first language by about 136 million people worldwide. Additionally, almost 400 million people in various parts of the world use French either as a second or a foreign language. French speaking communities are present in 57 countries including France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg in Europe, as well as parts of Canada and the USA. Large parts of Africa (known as Francophone Africa) use French as a strong second language.

French is also an official language of all United Nations agencies, and a large number of other international organizations. It is popular as a business language too, and the third most spoken second language in the European Union, after English and German.

In India, French is been taught as a second or a third language at the secondary and high school levels, and is available in the curriculum for ICSE, CBSE, International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE and State Board Schools. At the college and University levels too, French is available as a language option. In the corporate sector, a large number of French organizations have set up joint ventures in India, including Renault Nissan, Alcatel, Saint Gobain, Groupe Danone, and a number of others, all of which has contributed to a growing demand for people with skills in the French language. The new age businesses such as BPOs, Call Centres, and E-commerce companies have further expanded career options for those with knowledge of French.

 DELF:

The DELF diploma has lifetime validity and it is recognized worldwide. The organization of this diploma is a joint venture between the Cultural Section of the French Embassy in India and General Delegation of the Alliance Franchise in India.  The DELF is the French equivalent of the English proficiency test TOEFL.  The DELF is organized in different Levels, DELF A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, DELF PRO, and DELF Junior. Each of these certificates tests the four language proficiencies, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

 DELF A1

The DELF A1 level corresponds to the acquisition of fundamentals of the French language: aptitude to communicate in French in various day-to-day situations. With a A1 level you will be able to speak in most day to day situations. It takes (3-4) months.

DELF A2

The DELF A2 is based on the same principle: it recognizes the linguistic competency of a basic user, considered as a social actor. The candidate can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring the most common polite phrases and exchanges of information. It takes (3-4) months.

 DELF B1

At this level, the user becomes independent. He/she can maintain interaction: he/she can understand and maintain a discussion and give his/her opinion. He/she is capable of dealing with situations likely to arise in daily life. It takes (5-6) months.

DELF B2

A B2 user has a degree of independence that allows him/her to construct arguments to defend his/her opinion, explain his/her viewpoint and negotiate. At this level, the candidate has a degree of fluency and spontaneity in regular interactions and is capable of correcting his/her own mistakes. It takes (5-6) months.
