Several versions of these exams exist depending on the candidats age.

Why Take the DELF-DALF?

The DELF or the DALF:

  • is an official certificate, lifelasting, internationaly recognized
  • attests the degree of command of French
  • is a requirement to be admitted into French universities (level B2) and into several French speaking universities in the world
  • is a plus in a resume and opens the door to all kinds of educational and profesional opportunities

The Exams

The exams are based on most recent theories about evaluation of competencies in foreign languages. They are aligned with the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
For each level, 4 competencies are evaluated :

  • oral comprehension
  • oral production
  • written comprehension
  • writen production

Grades

The required grade to pass the exam is 50%. The student must show a minimum of understanding in each of the four competencies. For instance, if a student has a grade of 5/25 or lower in written production, he cannot obtain the certificate.

DELF-DALF

The DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi en Langue Française) are official diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify foreign candidates’ proficiency in French.

The DELF and the DALF certificates are made up of 6 independent diplomas that reflect the 6 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CECR): DELF A1, DELF A2, DELF B1, DELF B2, DALF C1 and DALF C2. The exams are divided into two parts: listening comprehension, written production and written comprehension are tested in a written exam, speaking and oral interaction are tested in a one-on-one exam.

The DELF B2 and the DALF C1 and C2 afford access to all French universities and to an ever growing number of European and francophone universities, eliminating the need for pre- admission French language tests.

The required grade to pass the exam is 50%. The student must show a minimum of understanding in each of the four competencies. For instance, if a student has a grade of 5/25 or lower in written production, he cannot obtain the certificate.

DELF Prim (ages 8-11)

The DELF Prim is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the proficiency in French as a Foreign Language of children ages 8 to 11. DELF Prim version is also open to all young French citizens who reside in any non-francophone country and who are schooled in local institutions. Specially drafted for children, DELF Prim is composed of individual certificates and is divided into three levels: DELF Prim A1.1, DELF Prim A1 and DELF Prim A2, corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The exam topics are made to suit the age group’s interest: immediate environment (family, personal details, interests, friends), everyday situations, etc. The following linguistic skills will be assessed:

  • Listening Comprehension
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Written Expression
  • Oral Expression/Interaction

DELF Junior version is also open to all young French citizens who reside in any non-francophone country and who are schooled in local institutions.These diplomas are valid for life.
